Her fate was already planned, and set. The days of her freedom, in a sense, were already gone. The marking stick was already in existence which would inscribe that number on her fair breast. In a sense she was then, unbeknownst to herself, 908; in a sense, then, a sense of which she was ignorant, she was already a slave. This sort of thing is not unusual, of course, the marking out of given women for bondage.
