They, too, of course, if were they here, would soon enough hurry to do so! There were the chains, the whips. But what if they, secure in my old world, locked in that gloom, held within those walls, should see me so? I wondered if they would be startled, or shocked, or scandalized, or dismayed. And what if they saw how willingly, how eagerly, how joyfully I did this!
