I did not see how I could, given this elevation, and the ascent, maintain this pace. And one of the prisoners had laughed at me! I would show them! There had been slices of fruit in the food bowl. There had been straw in the cell, for my comfort and cleanliness! Even a vessel for wastes had been provided!
