A man might look upon an attractive free woman, and want her, but, on the whole, she will be inaccessible, little more than a brief, troubling torment, but when a man looks upon a slave girl he knows that it is quite possible that he may obtain her, that she is quite likely to be obtainable, for a suitable price, which he may be able, perhaps with some sacrifice, to afford. She will then, in all her beauty, be his, to do with as he pleases.
