Who is courageous enough to swim the canals, or dive to the marshes, and perhaps into the jaws of tharlarion? We must be able to give an accounting of our actions and locations to any free person who might inquire. We require the permission of the free to leave the house, and must furnish the rationale for our departure, and the time of our expected return. Indeed, the time of our return is often specified by the master. We are not allowed out alone after dark. And who, in any event, can escape the confines of a house, or the chains which fasten us to the foot of a master's couch? We are seldom allowed outside the walls of a city, if not in the company of our master, or in some comparable custody. I looked down, to my left, into the canal.
