Perhaps the slave thief is a rank amateur, hoping to find you unsecured, as slaves often are, or the keys conveniently about, in the apartment, perhaps in a drawer or chest, perhaps dangling just outside your reach? More likely, he was interrupted, or alarmed, in his work, sounds within the building, conversations in the street, or such, and feared discovery, or despaired of carrying you away, bound and gagged.
