They, too, are commonly hand fed, but they may not ask for food articulately. They must make small, pleading animal noises, and hope that the master will give them something. Sometimes the master requires that he must first be pleased. In spite of what some in my former world might think, most slaves, sincerely and profoundly, want to be pleasing, and wholly pleasing, to their masters, domestically, socially, and, in particular, sexually. Many slaves, it must be understood, love their masters with a love that few free women, with their concern for status, self-image, self-containment, balance, commensuration, and proportion, could equal.
