I inferred two likelihoods given this information, one encouraging and the other considerably less so. First, and heartening, it seemed that Archelaos recognized the suspicious nature of openly maintaining a large number of armed men in the vicinity of Sybaris, many of a presumably unsavory sort. Would this not elicit curiosity? Might it not seem to require an explanation? Who are these men and what might be their purpose or purposes?
