The defenders not only have height and can strike both downward and horizontally, and are protected by the wall, but they can fight side by side. The climber may be frustrated by one defender alone, but, commonly, will encounter two or three. In this way, a single defender, or two or three, is a match for as many as the besiegers can place on a single ladder.
