Many others, hundreds, backs to the sea, shields lifted, must stay indefinitely in place, trusting to the return of the crews of the longboats, few of which, it seemed, cared, for their fees, to hazard a second trip. Some four Ahn after the beginning of the evacuation, the beach was empty save for bodies and equipment.
