Several cast aside helmets, weapons, and shields and tried to swim to the waiting ships. Several may have drowned but others were clearly drawn under the water, the churning and frenzy in the water apparently having attracted marine predators, presumably sharks or the snakelike sea tharlarion. Many others, hundreds, backs to the sea, shields lifted, must stay indefinitely in place, trusting to the return of the crews of the longboats, few of which, it seemed, cared, for their fees, to hazard a second trip.
